There are many advantages to riding a bicycle. First, using a bicycle can greatly help reduce the air pollution in many big cities. Second, people can improve their health by riding a bicycle.
The future of bicycle will be bright. In some European countries, city governments have arranged pedestrians to use “public bicycles” to travel round the city center free of charge.
Should Men and Women Be Equal?
People have different ideas about this issue, Some people say that men are superior to women in ability because men are physically stronger, do most of the hard labor in the world and hold most important positions.
Other people believe that women have the ability to compete with men. There have been many famous women state leaders and great scientists in the world. We should fully carry out the principle “to each according to his work” so that the enthusiasm of both men and women for work can be fully aroused.
In my opinion, men and women should be equal if they contribute the same. It is not fair if they are not treated equally.
HOW TO GET HAPPINESS
There is no doubt that happiness is the most precious thing in the world. Without it, life will be empty and meaningless. If you wish to know how to get happiness, you must pay attention to the following two points.
First, health is the secret of happiness (the key to happiness). Only a strong man can enjoy the pleasure of life. Try to keep it by doing some exercise every day.
Secondly, happiness consists in contentment. A man who is dissatisfied with his present condition is always in distress. Try to enjoy what you have and don’t long for what you can not obtain.
Finally, hope is the way that you pursue in your life. You can not have a dream beyond your reach but you must always have hope and try to make it come true.
You will feel happy if you try to keep these in your mind.
Wealth and Happiness
Everybody wants to get wealth. In today’s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person’s success and capability. Many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can but nice, large apartments in nice neighborhood; with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life.
In my opinion, people cannot do anything without money, but money is not everything. What money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If you are kind enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. With it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will and to your own happiness. If you want money just for your own needs, you’ll never be satisfied or happy.
In a word, you should have money spent for more people, only then can money be the source of your happiness.
Hobby（嗜好）
Hobbies are very important to a person. Without having any hobby, life won't be as colorful as it should be. I have a variety of hobbies, such as collecting stamps, playing musical instruments, reading, and doing sport activities.
When I am free, I will spend time on my hobbies. When I am in a blue mood, I will also do my hobbies to cheer myself up. Hobbies can help us improve our moods. Many hobbies requires devotion. For example, when you play a musical instrument, you have to practice over and over in order to perform good music.
After a period if you still enjoy it, gradually it will become a hobby of yours. But, remember: A hobby is like gold under the ground; no hobby will come to you unless you dig it out yourself. If you can treat study as one of you hobbies, learning will be more enjoyable. I hope all of you can find your own hobbies and also have fun from them.
BOOKS
As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.
Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.
Reading books needs some methods. Some books need to read carefully to digest the content and some require just scan to get the information you need.
So you have different ways to read books in different ways.
Time
Lost time is never found again. But many people often neglect time and waste it. People regard the proverb "Time is money" as a formula. In truth, we can earn the lost money again but can't find the lost time any more. Time is much more precious than money. If we treasure money, we should treasure time more.
Now I have a new plan for using my time wisely. I am a student, and all I have to do is read books and get knowledge from books. When I am waiting for the bus every morning, I can read a book or remember some English words.
At night, when I go to the bed but can't fall asleep soon, I can review what I have read during the day. Although I like to watch TV, I won't watch vulgar programs to consume my precious time. I must make the most of my time now lest I should regret in the future.
Automobiles
Automobiles, as a product of modern civilization, have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of human society. Industry needs automobiles for farming as well as transportation. Every day, automobiles drive people to and from work. On weekends automobiles take families for joyful outings. And during holiday seasons, automobiles fill the highways everywhere, even in remote areas. It could be said that the wheels of automobiles move society forward.
But automobiles have also given rise to a series of problems. For example, cities are overcrowded with automobiles. They create a lot of noise and traffic accidents which disable（伤残） or kill many people each year. Worst of all perhaps is the air pollution caused by the exhaust gases produced by automobiles. Some of the gases are highly toxic(有毒的) and a serious health hazard.
Choosing an Occupation
Every one faces the problem of choosing an occupation after graduation from college or university, which plays a vital role in his life. An appropriate occupation makes a man work with zest(热情） and vigor, as well as contribute to his country.
To make a wise choice, two important things should be taken into consideration. One is the interest, the other, the demands of people and society. Only if the two aspects are connected, can a man show his talent and ability to the best advantage. If the two conflict, the former should be under the latter, for the people's interests are more important than the individual's.
In regard to my choice in the future, I am fond of learning foreign languages; what is more, with the implementation of the Open-Door Policy, exchange between home and abroad in economy and culture has been growing significantly, thus I'm determined to be a qualified interpreter.
Environmental Protection
Today the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources and at the same time polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, life on earth cannot survive.
Concerned people have made some progress in environmental protection. Governments of many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop environmental pollution.
Still more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. People should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of birth control, to conserve(保存） our natural resources and recycle（再循环） our products. We are sure that we can have a better and cleaner place in the future.
Travelling
It is exciting to visit different places. As you travel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. Besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. Finally, you can get to know the customs and living habits of the local people. Today people are so fond of travelling that tourism has become one of the faster growing industries in most countries.
The main reason why people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, having worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a widened trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. For another example, spending an annual holiday travelling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not have much of an opportunity to be away from their homelands. When people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder.
Travelling is also one of the best means for learning. You may have read or heard about something but you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. Seeing is believing. Furthermore, if you area careful observer, you can learn much during your travel about the geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. No matter how well educated you are, there is always a lot for you to learn through travelling. The knowledge acquired from travel, as you will have found in your life, is no less valuable than that from any influential reference book.
Health and Life
As the saying goes, you don’t know what happiness is until you lose it’ you don’t know what health is until you are ill. “Health is of vital importance to life” sounds like a cliche to everyone, but it is absolutely true.
The negligence of the delicate balance of your body and soul, the harmful habits such as smoking, excessive drinking and burning mid-night oil will catch up with you someday. How many big plans are interrupted by bad health! Even a normal life is unimaginable without the guarantee of health.
How to keep fit is an eternal topic of diversity and controversy. Regardless of all the different suggestions poured from all kinds of sources, one should do at least two things for him/herself. First, hold an active and optimistic attitude toward life and maintain a mental well-being. Second, live a regular life and keep a balanced diet. Anyway, a healthy life is within reach when you begin to adjust your mind and body.
COOD HEALTH
We all wish (hope) to be happy. Most people say you are happy if you are in good health. So we should take good care of our health.
Health is the best treasure (which) a man can possess. Money can do many things, but it cannot buy happiness. However, so long as man is in good health, he can enjoy the pleasures of human life.
How do you keep fit: In order to insure good health we must pay attention to three things. They are-nourishing food, fresh air and proper exercise. So hope you live in a good environment and eat healthy food and do enough exercises and get rid of bad habits.
MONEY
Everybody wishes to get money so that he can maintain his livelihood. Some of them think the more the better. We normally say we can afford to have nothing but we can not having no money.
Money is so useful that it is impossible for mankind to live without it. For this reason, we have an interesting proverb. It says “Money can make the world go around.” If you have money, you can buy nearly everything you need. In a word, money is more powerful than anything else.
However, money should not be wasted. It must be used for some proper purposes. We young men should form the good habit of not spending money in the wrong way. It is easy to spend and waste them but it is hard to earn them in the right way.
Sometimes money can not buy everything, for instance, life and love. So money is important but money is not everything.
FACTORS OF SUCCESS
I would rather suffer hardships than fail. In other words, to achieve success is my only desire. We all know that there are many factors of success. Now let me write down the most important ones in the following.
Diligence—Foolish as a person is, he can succeed in his work if he works hard. That does not admit of any doubt. Many successful examples show that they are successful because they are diligent.
Perseverance—When you fail, don’t lose heart. Keep on working until you accomplish your aim. You must have this in mind that there is nothing in the world that can be done easily. It will take your time even your whole life to do that.
Honesty—If you tell lies or do not keep your words, no one will rely on you. I would rather be scolded than cheat (others). Nowadays people cannot live without others. It will be a dangerous thing if no one believes you.
It is the duty of every citizen to honor the national flag. Why? Because the national flag is the symbol of a country. To respect it means to respect the country. In other words, if a man loves his country, he must love the national flag.
THE NATIONAL FLAG
In school, the national flag is usually raised at a certain time every day. Then the principal, teachers, staff and students are to (must) stand before it and sing the national anthem. It is indeed extremely meaningful to attend such a ceremony.

THE BENEFITS OF TRAVELING
I am always interested in traveling. My reasons are quite (extremely) simple and clear. If anybody is not satisfied with my viewpoint(s), we can have a discussion.
In the first place, traveling increases our knowledge. Only by traveling can we see things outside our home town, as Chinese saying goes “ Traveling ten thousand miles and reading ten thousand books.
In the second place, traveling is good to our health. While we are traveling, we usually exercise our bodies. You get fresh air in mountains and forest when you travel in them.
In conclusion, traveling both benefit your mind and body. I earnestly hope that everybody must seize (grasp at) the opportunity of traveling.
HOW TO BE A GOOD CITIZEN
My aim is to become a good citizen so as to be able to render service to our country. However, to become a good citizen is not an easy thing. He has many duties to fulfill.
The first duty of a good citizen is to love his country. He should love his country where he was born and was educated. he He is to (must) be ready to sacrifice even his own life for the country.
His second duty is to obey the law and help the government (to) maintain order. As a good citizen, he should try to do as many good deeds as possible and also prevent others from violate the law. If everybody can do so, the country will be rich and strong (powerful).
THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION
It is impossible for us to make our country rich and strong without developing education. Why? Because education gives people knowledge and teaches them how to become good citizens so as to be able to serve their country. No wonder they say that education decides the progress, prosperity and civilization of a country.
Nowadays most countries in the world are enforcing compulsory education. It is necessary for all kinds of people, both rich and poor, to receive education. It is important to have this education because that education is the necessity for people’s life and work in the future.
Good education can help to develop science and technology of the country. So we must develop education if we want our country strong and powerful.
INDUSTRY (DILIGENCE)
It is a matter of course that industry will bring us success, wealth and good luck. I am sure that a hard-working person can always succeed in the work which he wants to do. This is unchangeable truth.
Idleness is the opposite of industry. It is the source of all evil. An idle man only enjoys playing and making pleasures. That he is doomed to failure is of no doubt. We should not follow his example.
Many examples show you will be successful if you are diligent and you surely fail if you are not as the saying goes: Diligence brings luck.
My Hometown
My native town is X. We have settled down here since my grandfather was a child. In other words, my family has lived here for more than one hundred years.
It is a small village. There are about one thousand inhabitants. Most of them are farmers. The mode of their living is very simple. However, they have already possessed television sets and refrigerators even cars. They made up their minds to live a modern life.
I love my hometown because I grew up there and I have many happy memories there. I often have my dreams of it. I like the people there. They are kind, diligent and hardworking.
MY SCHOOL LIFE
When I was six years old, I began to go to school. The first school attended was a primary school. There were many subjects which were taught in the school, such as Chinese, arithmetic, history, geography, drawing and so forth. As a student in China, I had to study very hard. My parents were quite proud of me.
After I studied there in my primary school for three years, I entered a junior high school. When I was twelve years old, I became a student of a senior high school. I still studied very hard. Except on sick leave I was never absent from class. Everybody looked upon me as a model student.
Now I am studying in a university. I also have to study hard thought I have more time I can arrange because it is not easy to find a good job if you don’t do so. I still want to attend the exam for postgraduates. I have a dream for my future and I hope my dream will come true.
WAR
War is cruel and disastrous. Though the people in the world are all opposed to war, they can by no means avoid it. This is indeed a regrettable thing. Common people are eager for peace in the world.
War is very terrible. Everybody hears it with fear. In a war thousands and thousands of lives will be lost and a large amount of money will be wasted. It brings us untold miseries and damage. Sometimes the victories also suffer a lot.
To sum up, so long as war is unavoidable, human beings cannot enjoy lasting peace. How tragic their fate is! We should educate people to love each other and to love peace. Try to be generous and live peacefully together.
Happiness
Happiness exists everywhere. Everyone has a different definition to the true meaning of happiness. Some people think possessing a great deal of money is the secret to happiness, while others feel giving aid to others makes them happy.
I approve of the latter there are many poor people in our society, and we can contribute some money to charities to help them. When the poor receive our assistance, their lives will improve. Smiles will appear on their faces, and this is the best reward we can get from helping others.
Regardless of gratitude of price, we should help others from the depths of our hearts. When we see their happy smiles, we will be happy as well. So I think that true happiness comes from the mind.
The place of Science and Technology in Modern Life
Human life can not continue without science and technology. For many years, human society has developed with the advance of science and technology while the development of science and technology has in turn brought the process to mankind. So the life we are living now is more civilized than that of our fore fathers.
The development of science and technology have brought about many changes in people's life. For example, the invention of television and space rocket have opened a new era for mankind. Through the use of TV people can hear the sound and learn the events happening thousands of miles away. Owing to the invention of spaceship and rocket, the dream of man's landing on the moon has now come true.
Science and technology also play an important role in our socialist construction. We may say, our socialist construction is just like a skyscraper, while science and technology are its base. Without the base, the skyscraper can't be built. Therefore, we should try our best to contribute to the development of science and technology so as to provide a more solid base to build our country.
